Meet Jeremy Casebeer, our DripDrop ambassador, and this week’s guest blogger. Jeremy was a three-year letterwinner at UCLA. An outside hitter, he led the team his senior season in kills and was the Bruins’ top passer. This season with AVP, Casebeer finished 5th as a duo with Casey Jennings.
I had played club soccer my whole life, but when I got to high school it was no longer fun. My Pops and sister played volleyball, so when my friends went out for the team I gave it a try and loved it. I played beach during the summers which helped me earn a scholarship at UCLA where I played indoor volleyball and studied Political Science and Environmental Studies. After graduating I interviewed for finance and consulting jobs, but couldn’t imagine sitting behind a desk 10-15 hours a day for the rest of my life. This is when I decided to try playing professionally. My first year out of school, I competed at the World University Games in Brazil, played on Australia and New Zealand’s pro tours, trained in Tel Aviv with the Israeli National Team, coached and trained in Turkey, and traveled through Bali and Thailand. I couldn’t have been happier with my decision.
The 2014 season was my first full season competing with the (Association of Volleyball Professionals) AVP and a big step forward, earning personal and team best finishes. I played with Casey Jennings, a veteran and warrior. Casey has been playing professionally for over 20 years; he has one of the best work ethics of anyone I have ever met and is a fierce competitor. The AVP is an extremely strong domestic tour, as demonstrated by the top 4 men’s teams medaling at the highest level on the FIVB World Tour. This year we had some epic battles with these top teams – some won and some lost. After early losses in St. Petersburg and Milwaukee, we worked our way through the losers brackets to earn two 5th place finishes, along with our team best, 3rd place in Cincinnati.
I started using DripDrop at the beginning of the AVP season this year, and loved it instantly. Some tournaments are held in tropical locations, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees with high humidity. When you play up to 5 matches in a day, cramping is a serious concern and will make you lose the game. Beach volleyball players fight dehydration and cramping in many ways, most of which aren’t ideal or sustainable throughout a tournament (examples: water, Gatorade, pickle juice, beer, mustard, etc). DripDrop is such a perfect fit because it has very little sugar, tastes great, and I can drink it throughout the tournament. What I really like about DripDrop – using it daily or when I am feeling sick – is that it keeps me feeling fresh and I bounce back quickly from illness.
Currently I am working on creating a nonprofit, Siding Out Sustainably (SOS). I am very fortunate to be able to play beach volleyball for a living and travel to incredible places around the world - some of which are underdeveloped and lack basic necessities that many take for granted. I have wanted to give back in some way for a while now, and SOS is the means to do it. SOS’s mission is to share beach volleyball through sustainable community development. An SOS team (comprised of professional volleyball players and coaches) will donate equipment and hold clinics to share volleyball with the communities near the tournaments we compete in. SOS will also work with leaders in these communities to learn how we can help add value by implementing development programs like increasing access to clean water, sustainable energy, and children’s programs.
